I have written on the less than productive work attitude of both employers and employees in our environment. For more, visit, http://melyakub.com/work-attitude-and-entrepreneurship-in-…/. The negative consequences are too many, from economic losses to social strains.
To ensure that you work towards improving your work habits, the first thing to start with is your attention to time.
1. Ensure that you always get to your appointments at least a few minutes to the agreed time. The benefits are many. You don’t start the meeting with an apology! You get to settle down before the contact. And it puts you across as the serious and committed person you are. Equally importantly, others will take note that you are a stickler to your appointments and will reciprocate. Talk of good ‘infection’.
2. Do not commit to many appointments no matter how much that feeds your ego as a ‘busy person’. You have only twenty-four hours in a day. If you over-book, you will be late for many and probably have to cancel others. Be realistic and remember that any time you delay eleven people for ten minutes, all of you have of have lost one hundred and twenty man-minutes!
3. Whereever you can, demand that others must be punctual, too. If you can, cancel the appointments you have with persons who don’t respect your time or enforce penalties.
4. When you have to be unavoidably late, respect the other(s) by pre-informing them. And be realistic as to when you will get to the venue. Don’t tell them you will get there ‘soon’! Tell them in minutes or hours.
After our life and health, we have nothing more important than our time. Don’t waste yours and don’t take others’ for granted.
